Support & Guidance
Arranging a funeral for a child is something no parent or family should ever have to face. At Stephen M. Godber Funeral Directors, we understand the deep pain of such a loss and are here to provide gentle, respectful support every step of the way. We’ve answered some of the most common questions families have, to help guide you through the process with clarity, compassion, and care. If you need further support, we’re only ever a phone call away.
Is there a charge for a child’s funeral?
No. We do not charge any Funeral Director fees for the funeral of a child under the age of 18. In addition, the Government’s Children’s Funeral Fund covers crematorium or cemetery fees for children and stillbirths after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
What is included at no cost?
We include a suitable coffin or casket (up to the value of £300), collection and care of your child, use of our sensory Private Chapel of Rest, a hearse or limousine, unlimited chapel visits, Orders of Service booklets, and six sessions of bereavement counselling if needed.
Can I personalise the service?
Yes. We are here to support you in creating a deeply personal and meaningful tribute. Whether it’s music, readings, keepsakes, or a unique theme, we’ll work with you to reflect your child’s personality and the love they brought into your life.
Can I bring personal items to place with my child?
Absolutely. We encourage you to bring in items such as teddies, toys, blankets, drawings, or photos. These can be placed with your child in our private sensory-lit Chapel of Rest to help create a peaceful, familiar space.
What funeral transport options are available?
A standard hearse or limousine is included at no cost, but we also offer alternative options like horse-drawn carriages or specialist hearses at a reduced rate. Please speak with your Funeral Director if you have something specific in mind.
What support is available for grieving families?
We offer up to six bereavement counselling sessions at no cost. These are delivered by compassionate professionals and can be arranged at a time that feels right for you.
Can siblings or extended family spend time in the chapel?
Yes. Our Chapel of Rest is available for all immediate family members and loved ones to say goodbye in their own way. We can accommodate individual or family visits as needed.
What if I’m not ready to plan everything straight away?
That’s okay. We understand that everyone grieves differently. Our team will move at a pace that’s right for you and be available whenever you feel ready to make arrangements.
Are financial assistance or grants available?
Yes. In addition to our own no-cost services, the Children’s Funeral Fund (England) covers many key costs. We will help you access and apply for any support available.
How do I start the process or ask questions?
You can call us on 0121 555 5529 or email rachael@godbers.co.uk for compassionate, no-pressure advice. We’re here for you at every step, however you need us.
